Acupuncture Q & A

What styles of Acupuncture are there?
Acupuncture has developed in the past few thousand years, through a rich tradition of trial and error, into an 'empirical' medicine. In the United States and Canada, many different styles of acupuncture have been introduced such as TCM acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture, trigger point acupuncture, Korean hand acupuncture, among others.

What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is a treatment used as a method to restore the entire body to a state of health; therefore, it can treat a wide range of disorders; for example, musculo-skeletal complaints, respiratory complaints, nerve-related disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, dental, hormonal, emotional, urogenital, cardiovascular and pediatric complaints.

How long are the needles?
Acupuncture needles are typically about 2 inches in length.  They will vary in diameter (gauge) depending on what they are used for.  They are metallic, solid and hair-thin.

How long does a treatment usually take?
Acupuncture treatments will vary in length depending on the ailment being treated and how long the body needs to bring itself into balance.  While some sessions last anywhere between 10-20 minutes, the time will vary depending on the patient's need.

What does an acupuncture treatment feel like?
People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Once the needle is in place, a sensation of a dull ache, a light electric current circulation along the treated limb, to a nice heat may be felt. The sensation varies according to the body's constitution and the nature of the ailment or the pain. Some people don't feel anything. This sensation is always within bearable limits and is considered a sign that the acupuncture vessels are opening up to the flow of Qi and that healing is imminent.
